DRIFT, Episode 2 opens with Appleshine - a minimalist, hypnotic small hours glide; a techno pulse wound tightly around a daydream vocal that ultimately unfolds into an ambient coda (reminiscent of Rez) that seems to make the whole track - and the listener - levitate. It is beautifully, uniquely, undoubtedly Underworld.
Appleshine features a new film by Simon Taylor, and Georgia and Lewis from Black Country, New Road on violin and flute respectively.
lyrics
APPLESHINE
Clouds like smoke
The smell of burning
Light casts shadows
Howling
A rumble in the sky
The end of summer
Petals fall from flowers
A crow
We watch the rain
The world is upside down
Cardboard at the windows
Block the light
Sitting in the sky
Howling
Willow and Oak rest their heads against each other
Hissing
Wings arrive
Grey and Black and White
A broken branch
And engine noise
Trees are breathing
She doesn’t like balloons
I sent you a message
We walked in the rain
Laughing
Unprepared
Holding bags
On top of our heads
Everybody else had nothing
They were stupid
We were great
I sent you a message
I got something to show you
It’s a few days old
Or amazing
It’s the weekend
It’s a big one
In Black and White
Don’t spill it
Tap it
Cover it in sugar
Eat it!
Oh don’t despair
We repair
Unconditional
I got something to show you
It’s a few days old
It’s amazing

If touring was possible, these are the sounds I’d be chilling out to in my bus bunk after getting off stage from another night of banging techno. (Karl Hyde/Underworld). Underworld
THREE is fantastic! ‘Bloom’ is pure, unpredictable, relentless sonic nectar. The Necks are an animal machine, painters of landscapes that make my head feel good. - (Karl Hyde - Underworld) Underworld
